Manifesto

We all want to change and be different in some way. Richer, fitter, sexier, smarter, whatever. Discontented with what we think we are, yearning for what we think we want to be.

That new person is not new. That new person is already inside you. That new you is just a revelation of what you already are, what already exists.

This is a game of revelation. A game of revealing to you who and what you are.

Pick an aim. Any aim. First, within the bounds of physics. I’m unlikely to play center for the Lakers.

Second, don’t worry about what you pick. Is it wrong to want this? Is it achievable? Is it silly? All of the second-guessing and uncertainty is to be expected, but not necessary.

Of course your aim is going to be “wrong”. Of course you will end up somewhere else—not where you are now, not where you think you want to be. You will, along this journey, see things you didn’t see before, understand yourself in ways you didn’t understand yourself before. If you have never had Thai food and then you taste it—your preferences have been forever altered.

You are deliberately seeking these life-altering revelations. There is no “wrong”. It’s not about the Thai food. There is only revelation and response. And the process of revelation and response—that is an inside job. That is like breathing. You do it. It changes you from the inside.

So. First start, and second, point yourself in any direction that seems right in the moment. You will course-correct when you are under way. The rudder works better when you are under way.

At this point you are standing, facing the sun. You aren’t moving yet. You have a direction, you have an aim. But what do you do?

A microscopic amount of “this”. Whatever “this” is. By the effect of substitution, you will automatically do a little bit less of “that”. You can’t be in two places at once; you can’t do two things at once; you can’t think two thoughts at once. You have more of “this” and, by definition, less of “that”.

So just do “this”. Do it badly. Fail abysmally, according to your standards. Just do “this” and see how poor the outcome is—compared to what your desire is.

Can you not see that a moment before “this” was not, and now, in this moment, “this” is? A moment of creation. You created “this”.

Now do “this” again. See? The second “this” looks a microscopic increment better than the first “this”, according to your standards.

You have learned a secret. You get better at “this” the more times you do it.

But that is not the secret. And now the process of revelation has begun. The point of doing “this” is not to create a perfect “this”. The point of doing “this” is to change your mind, your point of view. To reveal self to self.

What did your experience of creating a “this” and then another “this” reveal to you about yourself?

You are a creator.

You evolve—in directions and in ways that you choose.

You have taste.

If you can create—something was not there, and now it is there—and you can evolve—something was there, and now a better something is there—and you have taste—something was there and you saw how that something could be better—what wonders await you?

Meditation by changing the thought

Sit quietly. Thoughts come to your mind. Take each thought and try to make it a tiny bit more positive.

Meditation

Step one: reflect on yourself as the cause of your own problems.

Step two: do something about it.

You can, you know, just go

No waiting, just go.

No “as soon as I get . . . .”

Just go.

Had lunch with a guy today. Can’t launch.

Came home. Thought a bit.

I’m not launching either.

  1. Make a list of the major areas of stuckness—no movement. Circle. WordPress. ConvertKit. CraftCMS.
  2. Over time fill in a piece at a time. Get good with the tools. Start with Circle right now.
  3. Make the lead magnet.
  4. All that is fluffing, though. Just foam rolling before the workout. Make a plan and set a price. Any plan, any price. Change it later. Sell it on September 1.
  5. If you’re not moving it doesn’t matter where you start. All starting points will be wrong. Pick your favorite wrong starting point and get going.

What if you just adopt a persona

Starting when you wake up tomorrow?

It’s all malleable. Even you.

You can just decide to do stuff

You already know enough. You don’t need to get smart. You just need to do. Get that spreadsheet done.

I’m talking to me, not to you.

Progress from observation

Benefits at scale come with, consistently, wanting to go from observation, to general principles, to particular application, to mass application …

From a comment on HN.

  • See a thing.
  • Assert general principle, usually empirically in my experience. “Yeah, this is probably why” is as good as I get.
  • Apply principle to get more (or less) of that thing. Hmm. Works or doesn’t.
  • Go big or go home.

The key seems to be the willingness to take that second step. Are you willing to may bold, semi-plausible wild-ass guesses (step two) and expose those guesses to sunlight (step three) to see what happens?

I don’t have anything

I don’t have anything.

I don’t have anything.

I don’t have anything.

This house. The dog. Wife, children. Business. Career. Money in the bank. Skills.

None of that is mine.

All there is is Am. All there is is Is.

The present moment with all it contains. That’s all there is.

The sound of the air conditioner running at the next-door neighbor’s house. The sprinklers running in the front yard. The voices of the people walking by on the sidewalk out front. There and gone. The feel of cool outside air coming into the house through open windows and doors. The sound of the plane flying overhead. Parrots and crows squawking.

Immediately gone. A memory stored and quickly dismissed.

Today is a good day to be. To feel the Is.

Don’t even think about the Is. Thinking about the Is is pointless—I’m thinking about the Was as soon as I try to think about the Is.

Bob was onto something. “Don’t use your brain to think.”

I am living in the Is—whether I want to or not. I can be living in the yesterdays or tomorrows in my head, but in truth I’m in the Is now, whether I know it or not. What Is is at odds with the Should have tomorrow and If Only of the past.

That’s the source of discomfort. Get back to Is.

The stock market took a dump and the funny little numbers on my phone are lower than the funny little numbers on my phone were a week ago.

So?

Politics. It’s an election year. Noise from all sources. We are all doomed if X happens. Or X doesn’t happen.

So?

What Is?

Life is real only in the Is.

Let’s go to the gym. It’s a good day to be alive.

God is with me now

God is with me now.

Thinking this morning of the two cosmic moments I have experienced — stone cold sober, walking around.

Remembering the one in which I was not, in fact, sober—decades before.

What a difference.

The “not” — me as observer, separate. Everything else as small, distant, angular, mechanical and infinite. Receding from view.

The two walking-around moments—enveloped in all that is, simultaneously insignificant and essential, powerless and in control, empathetic and detached.

Here and gone within a couple of seconds, and I remember the feeling of the moment dissipating, with resigned sadness. Of course I cannot live in that moment forever. (Or can I?)

I wonder if I will ever have another moment like that?

Interesting that both moments came while walking. Both on random urban sidewalks. Both in the midst of deep immersion into esoteric matters—primarily Fourth Way, and New Thought authors like Emmet Fox. Esoteric Christianity, basically. And deep in the program, of course.

Cosmic connection through chemical assistance? Limited and limiting. Seek light the slow way.

Marketing (and life) strategy

Display the contents of your mind in public. Let those who are interested stay with you.

Attraction, not promotion.
