Nobody cares what you did yesterday

https://youtu.be/TW7tN0IAI5o

Self, listen to this: do not dwell on the yesterdays, the yesteryears. They don’t matter.*

What am I doing today? What am I doing right now? As David Goggins says in the video, no one cares that you ran a sub 3 hour marathon Back In the Day. What are you doing now?

* Yesterday can and should be fuel, can and should be a source of insight and wisdom. Nothing else. Learn from events. Distill wisdom from your past. You’re the only one who has access to that specific wisdom, and you’re the one who will be best-served by that wisdom when you apply it to today’s actions.

Hero’s journey

Here is something I do semi-frequently. It seems to help make me feel stronger and find direction.

I imagine myself as the hero of a story: the story of my life. I imagine the story of my life is a movie, a book. Someone else is watching the movie or reading the book.

“I wonder what the hero will do next?”

A long, hard journey to confront the dragon. Uncertainty and fear. Setbacks and adventures. Disappointment. Danger. Triumph and failure.

What is happening in my story, today? What will I do today?

The hero, on this day in his life and at this point in his Quest, would do X. That’s usually the kind of answer I get when I play this script in my imagination. I get refocused on the long game, the Quest. And I find the strength to continue the journey forward to confront the dragon.

Nothing new here. We are told all the time to imagine ourselves as the heroes of our own stories.

This is just a testament to the fact that it works for me.

Usually, the answer is a reminder of my personal mantra (“Trust God, clean house, and help someone else”) and the admonition to keep trudging. Nothing earthshaking, nothing magical—just enough to keep me going today.

Never attribute to a personality

. . . what you can attribute to a situation.

JP 04-28-2019 approx 23:30

Useful rule of thumb similar to “never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence. It’s an extension. Don’t attribute to incompetence, either. Attribute to situation. Then work your way backwards when the facts tell you to.

Discipline and repetition

I have been going 63 days straight on the 75 Hard challenge. This is my 30th day after blowing the picture on day 33 the first time I started.

Exercise every day. Water every day.

I just finished my first workout of the day: a run. Best performance for me yet: 4.19 miles, 45 min, average pace 10:45. Yeah you’re faster but that’s awesome for me. And I still have gas in the tank. I could have kept going.

Find one nail. Keep hammering that nail.

Don’t practice what you don’t want to become

He is talking about telling the truth.

This is the motto that Chris Williamson holds close to his heart.

Praise

But suppose that those who remembered you were immortal and your memory undying. What good would it do you? And I don’t just mean when you’re dead, but in your own lifetime. What use is praise, except to make your lifestyle a little more comfortable?

You’re out of step—neglecting the gifts of nature to hand on someone’s words in the future.

Meditations 4.19.

I crave praise. And yet when it comes, I wriggle uncomfortably and try to shake it off, like a dog shakes itself after a swim.

Nonnegotiables

Chris Williamson podcast. Mark Manson is interviewed.

Advice for finding the right “her”: ask yourself what are the three nonnegotiable traits you want in a partner. Focus on those exclusively and be tolerant of the rest.

Will this work for me, for individual growth? What are my three nonnegotiables for myself?

Will it work for hiring employees?

Read, yes. But read what?

I read every day. Because of the 75 Hard challenge I have morphed to reading business books instead of Meditations, for instance. I also read both of Jordan Peterson’s recent books. And I’ve slacked off with using Freedom to keep the floodgates closed.

And I’m not in peak mode, let’s just say.

Causation or correlation?

It’s an “and” world. As soon as I thought this thought I stopped, grabbed a cup of coffee, and wrote this.

Now I’m going to read a bit of Meditations.

Keep doing what you’re doing and you will keep getting what you’re getting.

Anonymity solves many problems

How do I know if what I am hearing is true?

Answer: when the source has no stake in the outcome, or better yet when the source is vested in helping me improve.

This site is anonymous for that reason.

As soon as money or ego or power enters the picture, what you hear is merely informational about the source. The communication has nothing to do with you (except as an opportune target) and everything to do with the source’s desires. Benefit to you is accidental at best.

How can commerce and truth co-exist? Maybe by being straightforward and transparent about motivation?

The reason this matters to me is that I am thinking about an online experiment that is overtly commercial, yet (I hope) will provide information and guidance that can make a life-altering difference to the people I want to help.
